A few notes on how we do things at Eden Dental Centre. On your first visit, your dentist will take a full health history. On follow-up visits, if your health status has changed, make sure to tell your dentist. Here’s what you can expect during most trips to the dentist.

How things are done at Eden Dental

Full Dental Examination

Your dentist will examine your teeth, gums, and mouth for signs of disease or other issues. A full set of X-rays is usually taken once a year, with 2 X-rays at your 6-month check-up.

This is followed by a scale and polish to remove plaque and tartar that can lead to gum disease, cavities, and bad breath. In most cases, a fluoride treatment is also applied.

Please inform your dentist if you do not want fluoride, as third-party funders have specific payment rules. Fluoride helps strengthen teeth, protect against decay, and reduce plaque and bacteria buildup.

Dental X-Rays

X-rays are images of your teeth that your dentist uses to evaluate your oral health. These X-rays are used with low levels of radiation to capture images of the interior of your teeth and gums. This can help your dentist to identify problems, like cavities, tooth decay, impacted teeth, abscesses, cysts or tumours.

Dental X-rays may seem complex, but they’re actually very common tools that are just as important as your teeth cleanings.

Dental Fillings / Restorations

To treat a cavity your dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and then “fill” the area on the tooth where the decayed material once lived. Fillings are also used to repair cracked or broken teeth and teeth that have been worn down from misuse (such as from nail-biting or tooth grinding ).

A tooth restoration is more than a filling. It is usually made from composite resin to restore a tooth to its original form, function and strength.

Should the restoration exceed 50% or more of the surface area of the tooth, then that tooth will require a CROWN or CAP

Crown & Bridges

Bridges and crowns are fixed prosthetic devices that are cemented onto existing teeth or implants by a dentist or prosthodontist. Crowns are used most commonly to entirely cover or “cap” a damaged tooth or cover an implant. Bridges are commonly used to cover a space if you’re missing one or more teeth. They are cemented to natural teeth or implants surrounding the space where the tooth once stood.

In addition to strengthening a damaged tooth, bridges and crowns can be used to improve a tooth’s appearance, shape, alignment and dental occlusion (bite). Gaps left by missing teeth can cause the remaining teeth to shift or overerupt , which can result in a bad bite. Bridges and crowns help prevent this from happening.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is needed when the pulp (nerve) of a tooth becomes damaged or infected. This can cause pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, or pain when chewing, but sometimes there are no symptoms at all.

Common signs include severe toothache, lingering sensitivity, pain that wakes you at night, or swelling in the gum, cheek, or jaw. Any swelling may require urgent treatment.

During treatment, the dentist will take X-rays, numb the area with local anaesthetic, remove the infected pulp, clean the root canals, and seal the tooth. In some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed.

Modern root canal treatment is generally no more painful than having a filling and is done using advanced equipment for accuracy and comfort.

Dentures

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. They are custom-made to fit your mouth and are more natural-looking and comfortable than in the past, although it may take some time to adjust.

There are two main types: full dentures (replace all teeth) and Partial dentures can be acrylic, nylon (flexible), or metal-based and may also be supported by natural teeth or implants.

Types include:

Conventional / Flexible Dentures – placed after teeth are removed and healing is complete
Immediate dentures – fitted straight after tooth removal, but may need adjustments later
Implant-supported dentures – attached to dental implants for extra stability

New dentures may feel awkward at first, affecting eating and speaking, but this improves over time.

Over the years, dentures may need adjustments or replacement as your mouth changes. Regular dental check-ups are important.

Care tips include cleaning dentures daily, soaking them when not in use, brushing gums and tongue, and avoiding hot water. Always see your dentist for repairs or adjustments.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a titanium post placed into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. It provides a strong base for a crown, bridge, or denture.

Implants are fixed in place and do not move like dentures. They also don’t require support from neighbouring teeth, helping preserve overall oral health.

To be suitable for implants, you need healthy gums and enough jawbone. In some cases, a bone graft or sinus lift may be needed to build up the bone.

Once placed, the implant fuses with the bone, creating a stable and natural-feeling replacement tooth. Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits are essential for long-term success.

Implants are generally more expensive than other tooth replacement options but offer a durable and long-lasting solution.

Dental Laser Therapy

Dental lasers are used for a range of soft tissue treatments, periodontal care, and teeth whitening.

They can be used for procedures such as gum reshaping, removing or treating infected tissue, biopsy procedures, treating ulcers, exposing unerupted teeth, and minor oral surgeries like frenectomies or abscess drainage.

In periodontal treatment, lasers help remove infected tissue from gum pockets and support gum healing.

For teeth whitening, laser-assisted bleaching can enhance results and reduce tooth sensitivity compared to traditional methods, although it is more costly due to the materials used.

What Does a Paediatric Dentist Do?

Paediatric dentists are professionals who cater and work with children. All the dentists at Eden dental practice paediatric dentistry and will also advise on the child’s well being and refer the child to the relevant specialists should the need arise, such as orthodontists or maxilo-facial Surgeons.

Periodontitis / Gum Disease

Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. It is one of the most common but often overlooked dental diseases.

Gum disease develops in stages: gingivitis (early stage), periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis.

Common signs include:

Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
Receding gums
Persistent bad breath or bad taste
Loose teeth
Pus around teeth and gums

If untreated, bacteria spreads below the gum line, causing gum and bone loss. This damage is often irreversible and can eventually lead to tooth loss.

Gum disease can also be linked to other health conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease.

Early treatment is important, as gingivitis is reversible, while advanced periodontitis may require more complex dental procedures.

Laser Tooth Whitening

Laser tooth whitening is a professional treatment used to lighten tooth colour and improve your smile. At Eden Dental, in-office laser whitening is combined with custom at-home whitening trays for best results.

The laser activates a bleaching gel to remove stains and significantly reduce tooth sensitivity compared to traditional methods.

Teeth can become discoloured over time due to food and drinks (like coffee and wine), smoking, ageing, trauma, or certain medications.

Whitening works by breaking down stains in the enamel using peroxide-based gels. Results vary depending on the type of discolouration yellow teeth respond best, while crowns, fillings, and some grey or medication-related stains may not whiten.

Side effects can include temporary sensitivity, so it’s important to follow your dentist’s instructions and avoid overuse.

3- Dimensional Scans [3-D Scans] / CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography)

Cone Beam (CBCT) is a special type of x-ray used when regular dental or facial x-rays are not sufficient. Your doctor may use this technology to produce three dimensional (3-D) images of your teeth, soft tissues, nerve pathways and bone in a single scan for further diagnostic investigation. CBCT is used for Implants, root canal treatment and other pathologies.

Dental Day Care Theatre

Patients of all ages, in certain circumstances, may require to be put to sleep. Third-party funders usually separate our patients according to age.

a] Children aged 2 years old to 12 years old:

These patients are usually taken when there is extensive treatment required, where the patient is or would be uncooperative in the chair. It is also not fair to put a child under so much stress and duress and run the risk of losing the patient to dentistry forever, due to fear or anxiety. Often, this fear has serious ramifications for the rest of their lives.

b] Adults: Adults can also have the same fear intensity as young patients. In these cases, it is also an indication, but generally, cases involving multiple tooth removal or wisdom tooth removal, as well as root treatment or periodontic treatment, are acceptable reasons for general anaesthetic.

Laughing Gas [Nitrous Oxide]

For patients who are anxious and have a fear of the dentist, Eden Dental does have the required equipment and techniques to administer “Laughing Gas”. It is important to understand that this treatment only relaxes the patient. In most cases an anaesthetic is still required.

Fillers and Botox

Botox reduces the activity of muscles in the face that causes wrinkles. Facial fillers, however, fill the trouble areas with collagen, which helps to stimulate collagen growth in the face as well as plump and lift the skin to replace collagen loss.

Orthodontics Treatment:

The Eden Dental Team will assess and advise according to the patient’s individual case.
